Question : Can I disable Highpoint HPT366 Ultra DMA controller to install Windows XP Pro?

I want to upgrade from Windows 98SE to Windows XP Pro but it will not allow me to because my motherboard (Abit BE6) has an onboard Highpoint HPT366 Ultra DMA controller.  Since I have nothing connected to this controller is there anyway to disable it and hide it from Windows XP Pro?  If not what can I do to overcome this issue?

Unfortunatelly you cannot disable them from bios because NT based operating systems doesn't bother what bios tells them.
You can do two things:
1. If you have both an ordinary ATA33 controller and HPT366 try moving your HDD cable to ATA33 and run XP setup again. But I do not recomend you this option.
2. Go to Abit site and find the XP drivers for HPT366 if this controller is integrated. If not go to highpoint-tech.com and download drivers fr4om there. Copy them to a floppy disk and run XP setup. Press F5 at the begining of installation and Xp setup will prompt you to insert a disk with a third party drivers. Do this and if everything is ok (it should be) setup will find your HDD and installation will continue without a problem.
Good Luck
