Hi, I have one XP Home edition computer and one Vista home edition computer.
One the XP Home computer, there was a user account called "Mary". This user account was later renamed "Jude".
On the Vista Home computer, there was a user account named "Sue", and this account was ater renamed "Admin".
Here is a schematic: XP machine --> Mary -->Jude Vista machine --> Sue --> Admin
Why does this matter? The reason any of this matters is that I am trying to do network file sharing between the 2 computers, while enabling password protected file sharing on the Vista computer. (File sharing between the XP and Vista is working fine in both directions with file sharing password protection turned off on the Vista machine).
I read at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx that you have to make user accounts on the Vista computer for every user who needs file sharing from the XP computer, and use the same passwords on both computers for all the accounts.
So I made an account called 'Admin' on the XP machine, and gave it the same password as the 'Admin' account on the Vista machine. And I made an account, just for good measure, on the Vista machine called "Jude" with the same password as that on the XP machine.
Now, when I try to access the public folder on the Vista machine from the XP machine, logged in as Admin on the XP, I get an error saying "you are not authorized to use this account". So I tried logging in as Jude on the XP, and got the same error message when trying to access the Vista machine.
Then I tried making a totally new user account, "Vivian", with the same password on both computers, and I was able to access the public folder on the Vista computer from the XP computer without any problems.
I am guessing the problem is due to some corruption that happened during the initial renaming of the accounts, and here's why: on the Vista machine, if I look under the account "Admin" (formerly "Sue") using Control Panel-->User Accounts and Family Safety-->User Accounts--> Configure Advanced User Profile Properties, under the user profiles I see 'ComputerName\Sue' listed as the profile that is stored, instead of 'ComputerName\Admin'!!! And there is no way to change this entry.
And on the XP machine, there is a similar sort of messed thing going on with the 'My Documents' folder still referring to the older user name folder"C:\Documents and Settings\Mary " rather than referring to "C:\Documents and Settings\Jude'....And when I copy files or save files to the desktop logged in as Jude they are saved to "C:\Documents and Settings\Mary" instead of the Jude folder.
Does anyone know how to fix these corrupted user profiles on either machine to allow me to do password protected file sharing on the Vista machine?
Thanks in advance for reading this very boring and confusing question....
