RedHat and derivatives are often well supported, slackware and debian may offer slimmer installs - though they are better suited to experienced users. If installing via floppy is a requirement, you may wish to search freshmeat.net for compact linux distros. slackware has been available via floppy in the past, not sure if that's still the case.
the key in running linux on older hardware is to not run heavy-weight X software, e.g. enlightenment. Using simpler window managers, like fluxbox (without KDE or Gnome) will provide acceptable performance within a graphic GUI environment, though it may not be pretty to look at. You can run "heavier" stuff, but it will run slower.
