Question : Transfer files between Mac and PC

I have a Windows XP PC using Comodo Firewall and Linksys Wireless Router. I also just got a Macbook Pro (with the latest version OS X). I have looked at tutorials online on how to share files between the 2 over my network, however I have not had any luck with it. I can't see shared folders on my Mac from my PC and vice versa. It was suggested to me to try setting up a Filezilla Server. I have that setup, but can only connect locally (on the windows PC). I cannot connect from the Mac. I'm not exactly sure how to configure this correctly.

How can I set this up so that I can transfer files between the 2 computers? I'd like it to be as secure as possible, but as fast as possible.
