Question : cannot install xp updates--manual or auto
|
|
Just upgraded a PC from XP Home to XP Pro and cleaned it of a lot of critters including a nasty case of Virtumonde. Tried to install MS XP updates in both manual and automatic mode to no avail. Used all the tricks listed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910359 and got a single error message during: At the command prompt, type the following commands, press ENTER after each command, and then click OK every time that you receive a verification message: regsvr32 wuapi.dll regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll regsvr32 wuaueng.dll regsvr32 wucltui.dll regsvr32 wups2.dll regsvr32 wups.dll regsvr32 wuweb.dll I got an error message in CMD stating "DllRegisterServer in WUWEB.dll failed. Retrun code was 0x80070005."
Tried it twice after a reboot. No good.
I have kinda run up and down the hits on Google search but don't seem to be able to find anything that works.
Any ideas?

No help for the update issue, BUT... if the machine had a nasty virus, I would get my data and re-install. There is no real way to be totally sure all of the tentacles of a virus have been removed. Once its been compromised, you can never be sure again. Just my 2 cents.
