Question : Outlook stops working after I remove Global Catalog Role from Exchange 2000 server

Hi there,

The company I work for is currently in the process of migrating to exchange 2007 from exhange 2000. Part of the procedure is removing the Global Catalog role from any Windows 2000 DC's, we currently have 4 Domain controllers (2x Windows 2000 and 2x Windows 2003).

I have added the Global Catalog role to both Windows Server 2003 PC's, I now want to remove the Global Catalog role from both existing Windows 2000 DC's (one of which is our exchange server). I unticked the Global Catalog checkbox from our Exchage server and let the changes replicate, pretty much as soon as the changes replicated I began to get calls saying outlook had stopped working. We are running a mixture of Outlook 2002, Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007, all outlook 2002 and 2003 client stopped being able to resolve the Exchange server's DNS name from within outlook. I.E if you try to create a new Exchange profile in outlook it couldn't resolve the name at all.

My workstation is using Outlook 2007 and seemed to continue working normally. Anyway, I reapplied the Global Catalog role to that server and normal operation was resumed. There are plenty of Global Catalog servers available so why did removing one of them cause such a problem?

Also for information, all 4 server are also DNS servers and DHCP is giving out DNS server addresses of the Windows 2000 servers.

All help appreciated.
