Question : Website not showing up in Google

I have a website that's been up and running for about 2 years now. The site has good content, and it's changed frequently. I've submitted the url to google. Why is the site not showing up in the first 5 or 6 pages of Google? There are not a ton of website in this area which offer the same services, and there are even sites that show up that don't even have relevent content, or any content at all! Some of the sites showing up are just test sites etc.

I do have Google adwords ads, but this shouldn't affect the listing results, correct?

What's going on here? Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
