Are you using 2003 or 2007? In 2007, the connector has been replaced by the transporter suite, which does exactly what you describe, except minus the LDAP. It routes SMTP between the two environments. Instead if LDAP, it actually copies entries between the address books/lists for the two environments.
The 2003 (and earlier) connector uses a proprietary intersystem routing mechanism. The directory exchange piece is identical, with a slightly different configuration to support the proprietary routing instead of SMTP. Based on my experience with it, you shoudl also be able to customzie the 2003 directory sync to allow SMTP routing.
If you wish to use LDAP routing, I can show you how to configure that in Domino, Notes, or the Outlook client. I don't know how to configure Exchange server for it, I'm not sure there is a way to do so. However, in all cases, you would have a small problem. LDAP lookup in both Notes and Outlook does not support an "address look/address book" concept. It only allows you to enter search criteria, and search against an LDAP directory. You can't simply start with a list and scroll through it.
