Question : How do I upgrade WSS 2.0

We have just recently purchased an HP ML350 Server bundled with MS SQL 2005 and would like to migrate our WSS 2.0 which is on an old HP tc2120 to the new server. I would like to know if there is a less tedious way to migrate it.

Answer : How do I upgrade WSS 2.0

this is a 2 step process... upgrade and then move, or move and then upgrade.
i'd recommend doing the upgrade first (wss 2.0 to wss 3.0), and then moving wss 3.0 to a new server.

upgrading:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/WSS/en/library/df43c3d7-b8a8-460c-bf3e-a46939d640d01033.mspx?mfr=true
(read that article to get an overview of the different options for upgrading.  then, download the book at the end of the article to get instructions on how to upgrade)

if you have customizations to your wss 2.0 site, you may also need this:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/WSS/en/library/df43c3d7-b8a8-460c-bf3e-a46939d640d01033.mspx?mfr=true

once you have your site upgraded to 3.0, the move to a new server is easy... assuming it's on the same domain.   to move your site, first install the sharepoint application on the new server, and run the sharepoint config wizard (which creates the sharepoint central admin site).  then, on your old server, make a backup of your wss 3.0 site using sharepoint central admin.  then, on the new server, use the option to restore a site (in sharepoint central admin), and point the wizard to the backup you created on the old server.  you can either copy the backup files to the new server, or, access them from a folder share across your network.
