Question : Shared IP Address on Linux and Apache webserver

We currently use Linux/Apache to host websites and use a single IP Address to resolve the domains to cut down on administration.  I have recently heard that this is a bad practice as search engines view shared IP addresses on a lower scale ranking a website.

Is there any truth to this?  Can someone point me in a direction to learn more on this and what is recommended to do?
