Question : Cognos Impromptu Catalog Question
|
|
Hey all,
I was wondering if there was a different application to create catalogs for impromptu then Impromptu Administrator. OR an easy to create a catalog file from hand.
The reason I ask is because IT won't give me the software because I'm not in their dept. (and it would only take a year if they did). I am a co-op in a quality assurance dept and IT doesn't want me breaking their SQL Server (which I don't even plan on touching - pick your battles). I want to make catalogs to simple Access and maybe Excel (yuck!) databases without having to make an IT request every other day while developing and modifying them. That way the dept can get data from beginning "semi-live" databases before they are upgraded to the SQL server.
Any help would be appreciated! (I am also trying to get this resolved through the ranks here)

Answer : Cognos Impromptu Catalog Question

There are some other tools (db modelling and ETL tools) that can create Impromptu catalogs but you will still need Impromptu Administrator for any type of changes to the catalog.
It is not possible to create a catalog file from hand (binary format).
If it is not possible for you to have Impromptu Administrator (and it sounds like you have the knowledge requiered) I would recommend that you use another tool for your database reporting such as Microsoft Query, Excel or Access.
