Question : Modem doesn't work

I have installed my USR 56k Win internal modem. When I'm trying to connect over a dial-up service, I get the message "error 630". I don't even hear the modem dialing, so it might be some sort of a communication problem with the modem.
I tried Win98's troubleshooter, but it didn't help.
Maybe the problem is in the modem's settings - it occupies COM2, but has IRQ 10. Could it be that the my modem is not configured to work on such an IRQ? If so, how do I change it?

Some pci modem will install enumerator and some not.
If you don't have one, that's fine.
Your sound card should be fine.

The only other step you have is to remove all traces of your modem from your system and then reinstall.
Remove the modem from pc,  from device manager and modem control panel. Remove dialup connection.
Be sure you have the correct modem drivers on a floppy or in a separate folder, say on your desktop.
Go to start/find/files and enter a name or partial name of the items in your modem drivers folder and delete them from wherever they are.
Be sure you have the backup floppy in case you delete the ones from the driver folder.
Do this for anything that has to do with your modem.
When you're done with that, you need to do the same process in the registry.
If you're sqimish about editing the registry, then get your coat on and go to the store to purchase  a hardware modem with no further ado.
Start/run type regedit and hit ok.
In the registry menu, choose export registry file, choose all and make a backup of your registry.
Using the edit/find option, look for your modem files as per above, and right click and delete those items.
Close when done.
Reboot with a floppy and at a: type in, no quotes, notice space, "scanreg /fix" and hit enter.
Reboot to windows when done.
Shut down, reinstall modem and reboot.
Windows will find, use the have disk option and install.
Pci modems generally give you one option to install correctly. This is it.
Take your time and be thorough.
Good luck
