Question : .ICO file type

I installed MSVB sometime back. It has a lot of icons of extension .ICO. But I inadvertently deleted the file type .ICO from the View - File Types menu while playing around. And now I can't view those icons from Explorer anymore. Is there any way to correct this problem and view those icons ? Another question I had was... what software programs can be used to view those icons independently of VB, and to modify them, etc. ?

Answer : .ICO file type

In Explorer, select View -> Options -> File Types tab.  Although you would hope that the file type was defined as ICON, you may want to look through the entire list first - file types may be listed obscurely  - it could be called Application Icon and be listed in the A's instead of the I's.  However, I digress, and you aparently have inadvertantly deleted the File Type already.
What you need to know first is the command line used to either open or view the .ICO file.  For instance, if you were using the ever popular Microangelo icon management program, the file would OPEN with MUEDIT.EXE.  If you don't have .ICO in any of your file types, you would click on the NEW TYPE button and fill in the DESCRIPTION OF TYPE with something like Icon file, ASSOCIATED EXTENTION with ICO. Leave the Mime type alone although you can scroll through the available list and see if anything looks like IMAGE/ICO.
Then, click on the NEW button to add an action.  You can enter anything in the ACTION field - this is what you would see highlited if you right click on an ICO file, but typically it's OPEN, EDIT, or VIEW.  Now the hard part - you have to supply the program to OPEN, EDIT or VIEW.  You should put the entire path into the APPLICATION TO PERFORM THE ACTION field such as C:\Program Files\Icon Viewer\IconView.exe - no quotes are needed.
