Question : XP SP2 Will Not Install: Error 5: Access is denied
|
|
I just recently had to restore a computer from the command line (command line restore of restore files from BartPe) and then afterwards ran a "R" repair from the XP install disk. Once the computer rebooted, it stated that it needed to install XP SP2. I agreed and during the install I received a "Access is denied" message popup. I then reserched on MS site and found this KB (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148). I followed it and it seems to be working.
Herein lies the problem, after every message popup I get the SP2 install has to backout and restart the computer. This takes approx 1 hour to run 1 cycle from the time I get the error message. I keep finding numerous HKCR keys without "Full Control" priveleges.
Is there a way to update all of these to Full Control so I can get the SP2 install done?
or
Is there a way to suspend the SP2 install to allow me to fix the registry entries and then continue on.
FYI...I am using an XP SP2 CD so this may help?
Thanks for any help!

Greg,
You can reset the permissions en masse, using SubInACL utility from Microsoft. See the solution posted at AumHa.
