Question : svchost.exe 99% cpu util, and other problems
|
|
I have a Dell laptop with a fairly new install of Windows XP professional. Lately, the user has noticed that his boot up's take close to 10 minutes (processor is just pegged at 100%) before he can do any work. Also, most times when he shuts down, the shut down windows just hangs there forever until he holds down the power button for the 4-5 seconds needed to kill the power. The thirds major issue seems to be that when he uses the docking station, his ethernet adapter never connects...only his wireless card is active on the network. When he goes through the undock proceedure, his built in ethernet card still does not function, until the laptop is totally shut down then restarted without being on the dock. Only then will the ethernet card work.
On the slow boot up, task manager is showing that one of the svchost.exe processes is taking up 99% cpu utilization. It does this for about 7-10 minutes and the computer is pretty much unresponsive during this time. I did the tasklist /svc command from the cmd window, but it doesn't tell me which svchost is causing the problem. Is there anyway to figure this out?
Thanks,

2 updates I would start with, and plenty of details on how to use process explorer to get more info on the svchost.exe.....
FIX: When you run Windows Update to scan for updates that use Windows Installer, including Office updates, CPU utilization may reach 100 percent for prolonged periods http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089
