Question : Format columns cells formated as shortdate  to show as months in Pivot table

How can I format a column to show the date pasted from another file with short date format  in a Pivot table as month format  Jan, Feb, Mar, etc? I have try several thing like Custom format the cells in the column, even putting an adjacent cell to formatted this way, but it keep showing the full date in the pivot Table.
Im importing data from a data base, two of these columns come with the short date format, I need to covert these columns to text format so it will show the data as month in this format Jan, Feb, Mar, etc to sort by month.

What Im trying to do is import data that show an Issue that has been opened and closed, but need to show this by Month and the imported data comes per day with full short data format cells.

In the PT, right click the date field and use Group to group the dates by month.
