Question : Word 2003 crashes when selecting a recipient source durning a mail merge

I have a client whose Word 2003 crashes when selecting a recipient source during a mail merge. They are using an Excel spreadsheet with names and addresses, this same spreadsheet used to work for a mail merge on the problem PC.
Word closes, no error message, and no item in the Event Viewer.
So far:
I have successfully done the mail merge with the same Excel spreadsheet on a different PC using the same version of Word and Excel.
Done a detect and repair of Office.
Uninstalled Office and then removed other Office folders floating around the hard drive, then reinstalled Office.
Ran CCleaner, removed files, repaired registy entries, etc.
Opened the Excel Spreadsheet through Excel successfully and viewed the data.
Repaired MDAC 2.8 (or 2.81) by right clicking mdac.inf and selecting install.
Deleted all normal.dot and ~normal.dot files on the hard drive.
Opened the mail merge toolbar and tried selecting data source from there, same result, Word closes with no message.

Have you tried creating a new user profile on the system? If that fails too, then I don't think you can avoid a system rebuild.
