Question : XP PRO  home network doesnt connect

1. please provide a link that explains xp network setup in detail.

2.i have 3 computors with dlink 10/100 cards that is connected and working correctly. no internet connection.

3.1 computor is a hp 6460 win98 upgraded to xp pro.
  other 2 computors are compaq 5300us that came with xp and upgraded to pro.

note: i have setup network with win98 before.
4.if i ping i get nothing but the first 3 #'s are different. they had to be the same in win98 setup
but i cant find where to change the #.

5. i have done xp accessories commo setup 3 times using no internet connection and making a floppy disk to do the other computors.
i have used a different computor as the main computor.

6.i think i have sharing and other required programs on all three computors. i have all drives and some folders set as shared with no password or limits. i understand about no safety on internet.

7. the hp 6460 is very slow to start like it is hunting for the code #'s for network card. in win98 i rt clicked on networks/properties and set the #'s but i cant find same in xp.
