Question : How to do a Unattended Setup through distribution share?
|
|
I would like to do a Unattended Setup through distribution share. Usually I do it with Unattended Setup through CD-ROM. I am not talking about RIS here tho. I refered to this article, but I couldn't find the boot disk. http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Customizing-Unattended-Setup.html And, what's the difference between the Unattended Setup through distribution share and RIS? Can Unattended Setup through distribution share perform a clean install of windows?

An unattended installation from a network share is effectivly the same as doing an unattended install from the CD - the only difference being that the i386 folder is copied to a shared folder. You create an answer file, and then launch the setup program.
This has two major drawbacks 1) as with an unattended install from CD, you can only install the OS - no apps etc. (with RIS you can have the Apps etc as well)
2) somehow you have to connect to the network share - that means creating a boot disk with the necessary network drivers and protocols. barts boot disk http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/ is a utility that can be used for building such disks but you will need to get the specific INF files for your network card. (You will also need to disable SMB sigining on the server to allow a DOS session to connect to the server)
RIS - or WDS - offers a better solution in that you can create images of configured machines and the PXE boot means you don't need a boot disk, however RIS/WDS but it is a bit esoteric.
I can't help thinking that a solution like Acronis True Image which can create images of a machine in a configured state with all apps etc installed would offer a much better solution.
