Question : Time synchronization

Hi all,

I'm having time sync issues in our network. Via logon script I try to sync times with the server but I'm still having too many workstations that are off by anywhere from 1-2 hours in the future. I knew they were from a different batch of machines so I went into the BIOS and tried adjusting the internal clock hoping that may have been the cause. It just went right back after the next logoff so now I'm stumped.

I know the problem is coming from some sync issue that I have no doubt I've caused; I just need to find a new place to look.

Any suggestions?

Answer : Time synchronization

There are a couple ways you can do this:

Are you running any logon scripts through GPO's. If so, you can add this line to it. That will reset your clients to use the server to synch with.

net time \\timesrv /set /yes

On the above site, (left hand side), there are two utilities that make setting up time easy. One is called Symmtime. The second is called Domain Time II. They come from symetricom, who makes time servers.

Symmtime is free and will synchronize your server with outside time servers. Once done you can have all clients and servers synchronize up to that. Domain Time II is an audit software that will look at all of your Domain PCs (XP, 2003 servers, NT, 2000) and it will audit the time for you. So, you don't have to do it manually.

Process:
What I have done in the past is used symmtime to synchronize my server to an outside server. There is a list of outside servers, including Gov servers, that will provide time to you located in symmtime. Once I get the outside synchronized to my DC. I make sure all clients go to my server for time. As KCTS stated, by default they are suppose to do it anyway. I don't know why they are off.

Here is the method I use to set up an authoritative time server.:
