Question : AVG 8 Administration Questions
|
|
We just started using AVG 8 for several clients and I have some questions that I hope someone can clarify for me in addition to a problem at one location:
1. Do we need to use the built-in proxy to have centralized updates or will clients retrieve updates from the server with the default configuration of http://server:4158/avgupdates?
2. I have a client whose clients appear in the remote administration but don't sync with the shared settings and the individual settings cannot be changed from the remote admin console.
3. Will AVG 8 update itself on the server without a user being logged in?
4. Is there a list of recommended excludes by default?
I really like AVG's software but I find the documentation is a bit sparse. Thanks, John

I agree with Tigermatt, but have a few things to add:
2. Some of the shared settings have to be right-clicked and "Mandatory" has to be selected for them to sync with the workstations. If you want different shared settings for different groups of computers, such as servers and workstations, you have to create a new group and assign the computers you want in them. After that, you can assign the shared settings you want for that group alone.
3. The AVG Admin server now runs as a service. It previous versions, however, it was necessary to disable the default Test and Update scheduled tasks and create new ones that have the "Schedule for all users" radio button selected instead of the default "Schedule for current user only".
4. There are no default excludes, but my experience through documentation I have read teaches me to exclude: \config (registry), I have been in touch with AVG tech support, and they are not very responsive, but they have had to talk to me a little, because I am a reseller for them. There are a number of serious bugs with the AVG 8.0 console, especially dealing with remote deployment of workstations. They actually told me to wait and not upgrade any more clients from 7.5 until they worked out some of the bugs. After working with the AVG Console for awhile, I developed a way to work around the bugs to deploy clients and have a checklist on how to do it.
