Question : Windows XP Performance

Hello,

I have a PC with Windows XP Professional.   It is a relatively old but top of the spec PC at the time - i.e. Intel Xeon 2.4Ghz.  I want to avoid a re-install because it will become too messy due to minor pieces of software installed, configured etc.  I also don't want to use a ghosting such as Nortson Ghost software because that will just mirror any problems already on there.

I have a few options such as defragmenting the hard drive, installation some optimisation software (not sure which one to install).  I have already minimised the start up components so only the essential software is loading at start up.  I am just wondering what else I can do or if anyone knows any good software that can help with this.  One problem I also have is with McAfee, I can't find in the options where to modify the scheduling of virus scans - checked in all menu's but it is not clear.  McAfee does seem hog the system resources very badly.

Any help or advice appreciated including particular software that may help improve performance.

Kind Regards,
Raheel

Additionally, a large amount of Disk space is often taken by the System Restore folder named System Volume Information.  If you temporarily disable, then re-enable System Restore, this should regain a considerable amount of Disk space, and may well improve on overall performance.
Please be aware that you'll lose all restore points, but if your machine is functioning normally you'll immediately start creating new Restore points.
