My customer has a Dell Dimension 3000 put in service 9-2005 which blue screened 2 weeks ago with the following error message. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer inmountable_boot_volume If this is the first time you have seen this stop screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps. Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacture for any windows updates you might need. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software, disable bios memory options, such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer , press F8 to select Advanced Startup options and then select Safe Mode. Technical Information: Stop: 0x000000ed(0x823ce900, 0xc0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000)
Step 1: verified with customer that no new software had been installed. I confirmed no new hardware was installed. Restarted the PC several times and got the same error message as above. Step 2: tried Safe Mode and got this blue screen message. Loading PBR for descriptor2

Step 4: Booted to diagnostic partion, express test had no errors, all diagnostic lights on the back of the PC are green. Step 5: Connect HD as a slave on different PC Chkdsk shows boot file corupted errors could not be repaired. Step 6: Connect HD back to the Dell 3000, ran extended custom Dell test selected OS will not boot and got the follow error codes. Error Code: 0F00:0244 MsgBlock:6528484 Uncorrectable data error Error Code: 0F00:1A44 MsgBlock:6528484 Uncorrectable data error Step 7: Ran recovery console from WinXP cd, ran fixmbr, fixboot, format c: and reinstalled OS without any errors or problems. Step 8: Ran chkdsk after reinstall no errors or bad sectors found. Step 8: Took the PC back to the customer, added it back to the domain without any problems. The PC has been back in service about a week . The customer called today and let me know that the same PC is getting the same errors. The customer has 5 other Dell Dimension 3000 purchased at the same time that are not having any problems. Thank you in advance for suggestions to fix this problem.

you need to check the hdd for physical errors. a bad hdd can be repaired, but it will keep failing and eventually die altogether. run DFT (drive fitness test). it's a hitachi utility, but it runs on most drives. download the iso and burn it to cd and then boot up on the cd
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
accept the defaults and run the Advanced test. it will probably take several hours to complete. when it's done, you will get a disposition code. if the screen is green, the drive is fine... if the screen is red, the drive has a problem. to get specifics on the problem, look the disposition code up in the user's guide (which is also found at the link above)
by the sounds of your situation, you need to replace the hdd. DFT will confirm whether or not this is true.
